Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is more than a sport, martial art, and self-defense system - it's a way to improve your overall confidence, sociability, flexibility, kinesthetic awareness, health, and fitness!

BJJ challenges every part of your being. It is a mental and physical puzzle to be solved, it's never boring or monotonous, and every day you'll learn something new about yourself, and the sport of BJJ.

At Open Guard BJJ, we work to inspire our students to enjoy training by de-emphasizing the fighter mentality, and focusing on the Gentle Art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Jiu Jitsu is a Japanese phrase that is commonly translated as "the gentle art."). Your ability the better defend yourself will happen automatically as you continue to practice BJJ.

What to Expect at Open Guard BJJ

When you come to class, you can be rest assured that you will learn the art of BJJ in a safe and enjoyable environment, and you will not have to deal with overly aggressive students. We do not tolerate "fight-team mentality."

Instead, we emphasize practical, real world self-defense in a healthy and safe environment. We encourage camaraderie amongst our students which makes everyone feel more secure about training, and limits the ability for students to get injured. Classes are a fun and playful atmosphere where students can develop their skills without the concern of being pummeled.

Some of our more popular training methods are:

Flow Drills - some students become proficient with basic BJJ techniques in just a few months. However, when it comes to transitioning from one position to another, movement is sometimes over-stated and robotic.

Our flow drill classes help students transition from one position to another by chaining together a series of movements designed to mimic real-world scenarios. The idea is to constantly move without attempting a submission. Done correctly, a 5-minute flow drill can feel like 30 minutes of non-stop sparring.

All drills are supervised. Take your time, focus on movement and leave your ego at home.

King of the Hill -this drill allows one person to work with several different partners in one training session. Basically, you stay in the drill as long as you continue to sweep your opponent or he loses a dominate position. Once swept, the next student in line will rotate in and you begin again, until there is only one student left.

This drill will help adjust your timing and sensitivity to different body types and strength levels.

Tactical Training - this is where you get to test your skill and re-enforce the execution of techniques that you have learned in past classes against fully resisting opponents. Our instructors will pair you with different partners, ranging from beginners to advanced BJJ practitioners. Again, leave your ego at home.
